Daily Teaching Guide
Preschool
January Week 2
Hibernation Week
Day 5
Circle Time:
Where Is Bear?
Sing the song below with the children
The tune is sung to - Where Is Thumbkin?
Where is bear? Where is bear? (Child with bear will show picture)
There he is. There he is.
He looks tired. He looks tired.
Go to sleep. Go to sleep. (Have child put the animal to bed)
Teacher will need to print out my Hibernating Match up Game cards (shown above) and cut them apart to use with the song. Then teacher will give each child a picture of a hibernating animal card. If you have more than six children in your group you will need to print out two or three sets of the game cards. Some of the children will have duplicate pictures.
As you sing the song, after you sing the part "Where is bear"? Stop the song and have the child/children with the bear card show you and the class the bear picture and then finish the song.
After you finish the song, the child/children with the bear card will now put the bear to sleep. Teacher will pass the child/children a sturdy paper plate (bed) and a piece of felt (make sure it is large enough to cover most of the animal) Have the child/children place the "bear card" onto the paper plate and cover with the felt (blanket). Then pass back to teacher.
Now sing the song again, this time change "bear" to one of the other animals on the hibernating cards that you passed out to the children earlier. If you have more than 6 children in your group then print out two or three sets of the pictures. Have all the children that have a bear show their picture and then give the paper plate (bed) to the first child with the bear, then to the next child with the bear, etc. Then sing song again with another animal and repeat. If you need to use two or three sets of these pictures then you may want to use two or three paper plates and let them all place their bears onto a plate and cover them up.
As you sing the song above, you will need to substitute the animal "bear" with another one of the animals on the hibernating match up game cards; such as raccoon, snake, fox, etc.
Repeat until everyone has had a turn.
Art Time:
Snake in the Rock
Teacher will need to print out my snake picture onto card stock paper for each child. Have the children color the snake. Explain to the children how snakes hibernate in the winter time and how some snakes will in between rocks or into cracks in the rocks to hibernate. Teacher will cut out two large pieces of card stock paper to resemble a large rock for each child, or teacher can trace a rock shape and have the older children cut out their own rocks. Have the children paint their rocks black or brown. Then teacher will place the two rocks together, painted side out, and then tape or staple one side of the rocks together, so they will open up like a book.
Have the children color or paint their snake. After the snake dries, teacher can show the children how the snake can hide between the two rocks they painted, by opening up the two rocks, like a book, and placing the snake inside, then teacher will say, oh our snakes our hibernating now, does anyone know what hibernating means? It means Mr. Snake is sleeping through the cold winter months.
Learning Time:
Snakes Writing Page
Teacher will need to print out one page per child onto copy paper. Have the children color the page. Point out the letter S at the bottom of the page and have the children trace the S with a marker or crayon. Tell the children some words that start with the letter S.
Special Activity:
Play Dough Snakes
Teacher will need to provide the children with some play dough. Teacher will show the children how they can place some play dough between their hands and carefully roll it to make snakes, help the children as needed, to show them how to roll the dough to make snakes.
